BSA Approves Membership Policy Change – Gay Youth Inclusion RatifiedCouncil News—May 23, 2013
Dear Piedmont Scouting Family and Friends,
Today, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) voted to change its membership policies about inclusion of gay youth. The approved resolution removed the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. Included in votes cast were 5 Piedmont Scouting leaders who traveled to Grapevine, Texas, for this meeting and vote, joining approximately 1,400 voting delegates from around the nation. As a result, gay youth will be officially accepted as members of BSA. The vote was 61% in favor and is in effect as of January 1, 2014. We celebrate this vote as an important and historic step forward.
Piedmont is an inclusive community and Piedmont Scouting has long reflected such values. We do not expect the outcome of this vote to change the administration of our local program. All who support the Scout Oath and Law are welcome in our packs, troops, crews, and everywhere else in our Council.
We look forward to hearing from you and keeping the Piedmont community informed about ongoing developments. Please send us your thoughts and questions at email@example.com.
Yours in Scouting,
President, Piedmont Council, Boy Scouts of America
