Beginner and advanced trips are offered and are open to all middle school and high school registered Scouts and coed Venturing Crew members in the Piedmont Council (on a space-available basis).

Piedmont Scouting backpacking trips and hosts for Summer 2018 include:

  • July 5-8: Beginners Trip to Grouse Ridge (Troop 1)
  • July 8 11: Desolation Wilderness -Intro to Backpacking (Troop 11)
  • August 4-11: 50 miler Yosemite Emigrant Wilderness (Troop 4)
  • August 5-10: Yosemite Ten Lakes Basin (Troop 15)
  • August 6-10: Coed Venturing Trip to 1,000 Island Lake
  • August 8-12: Intermediate Level Trip (Troop 1)

“The summer backpacking trips are a fantastic opportunity for a group of Piedmont Scouts and Venturers to visit a beautiful area of the Sierra, full of awesome views and stunning lakes.  No backpacking experience is required, as long as you are fit and up for an adventure”, says longtime backpacking leader, Mike Bandrowski.

This year, Mike will once again be leading the High Adventure Crew (part of Piedmont Council’s coed Venturing program) on a 4-night coed backpacking trip to 1,000 Island Lake, Garnet Lake and Lake Ediza near Mammoth. This loop is a top-tier backpacking circuit in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, covering about 25 miles with 2,110 feet of elevation change. It incorporates sections of the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, while exploring beautiful landscapes in the Ansel Adams Wilderness of Inyo National Forest. Each backcountry lake is located below soaring snow-shouldered summits.

There are still four youth spots available on this coed High Adventure Crew trip, as well as a few openings on the other trips. Interested Scouts, Venturers and parents should check the summary of backpacking trip dates for additional details here.
