PCSC Teens Tutor Oakland Children

The Piedmont Community Service Crew (PCSC) does a wide range of service activities that are organized by our crew members.  As an example of the breadth of our events, we have partnered with Harbor House so our members can sign up to do socially distanced tutoring of elementary school kids!  Crew members will go through training on a live zoom session to prepare and be approved by our Crew Advisor. Once matched with a child, the tutor meets with their kid 2-3 times a week throughout the semester.  Typical tutoring sessions last 30-40 min, and crew members will help their kid in subjects that they are learning online for school. PCSC members will look forward to bonding with a child from Franklin Elementary School in Oakland while also helping a disadvantaged community.

We have another new program to tutor kids from a community of families who emigrated from Myanmar, soon to be announced! During “normal” times, PCSC had been tutoring kids from this community group, weekly on Thursday nights for the past 6 years.

The crew is run by a team of youth officers who are mentored and get weekly job coaching by the Crew Advisor. We actively encourage members to feel empowered and to contribute to the direction and success of the crew so that they gain practical leadership experience.  Our events are determined by peers and we not only seek activities that are rewarding, but also are fun and build camaraderie and teamwork.  Most of our activities are planned by the members plus we fundraise to cover the cost of the work that we do.
