In Remembrance of Stephen D. Bechtel Jr.

 In Community News, Council News

It is with great sadness that we relay that a philanthropic giant and Scouting pioneer has passed away. Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., a Distinguished Eagle Scout from Piedmont’s Troop 4, died Monday, March 15. He was 95.

Mr. Bechtel was a lifelong Scout. He earned his Eagle rank in 1940, and was recognized with the Silver Buffalo award for distinguished service to the youth of America in 2005. He gave a transformative gift to BSA in 2009 to build the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Piedmont Scouting is grateful for the steadfast support over decades from Mr. Bechtel, his family, and the S.D. Bechtel, JR. Foundation. That support includes renovating the council office, and a series of gifts designed to support operations and long term financial strength. Mr. Bechtel also served on the council’s advisory board from its inception.

Mr. Bechtel will be missed, but his legacy will be felt for generations. To learn more about his life and legacy in Scouting, visit his biography page at Stephen D. Bechtel Jr..

Please join us in sending prayers to the Bechtel family during this time of remembrance.
